Oregon Workers’ Comp Group Avoids Decertification

Bangladesh Factory Victims Wait as Compensation Meeting Delayed

The Department of Consumer and Business Services said Monday that the Oregon Employers Trust Inc. submitted a letter of credit from a bank. The state had earlier threatened to decertify the trust unless it could increase its security deposit by $750,000 to $3.95 million. Oregon Employers Trust is the states largest private group of employers that self-insure for workers compensation. It includes about 200 companies. State officials say the security deposit ensures the trust can pay benefits for workers facing job-related injuries or illnesses. Copyright 2013 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Cannes Still, Kevin Gardner , a Wal-Mart spokesman, said the companys own investigation showed no evidence of authorized or unauthorized production at the time of the tragedy at Rana Plaza. Primark Agreement Wal-Mart has declined to compensate victims of the factory fire and did not join a fire and building safety pact supported by labor groups and signed by more than 80 companies this year, according to a July statement from IndustriALL. Associated British Food Plcs Primark chain, which used a supplier in Rana Plaza, has agreed to pay compensation to survivors and dependents. Its the only retailer to do so for Rana Plaza, in accordance with existing frameworks established after the Spectrum factory fire in 2005, according to the Clean Clothes campaign, which is working with IndustriALL on the meeting. Some European brands including C&A Group, Tengelmann Groups Kik and El Corte Ingles SA agreed to pay compensation for the Tazreen fire in April, though that process stalled due to the Rana Plaza collapse, Raina said. Representatives for the brands sourcing that received goods from those two factories, who had been invited to attend the IndustriALL meeting, will receive an invitation for the re-scheduled September event, including Walt Disney Co. (DIS) and Li & Fung Ltd. Rana Plaza Collapse Victims Still Waiting For Compensation

"This should not be a mammoth task for the government." Meanwhile, survivors have struggled to rebuild their lives. Nuresta's uncle Hossain, who is 21, stopped working in the garment industry and has become a mason's helper since the collapse. His new profession offers less steady income, but his parents don't want him working in the garment industry after the death of his only sister and her husband, he said. "The situation into which these workers have been forced is completely because of the government's indifference and lack of initiative," Ahmed said. While victims rallied outside of Rana Plaza this week, workers from factories in the capital's suburban industrial zones like Savar and Gazipur continued to demonstrate on Tuesday , demanding wages and bonus compensation ahead of the Muslim religious festival Eid-ul Fitr this week. "The unrest is expected to spread as the government seeks to settle the issue by force rather than finding a reconciliation to the workers' legitimate demands," Selim Ahmed, a bdnews24.com reporter, told HuffPost from the scene.
